Our 500 acre farm has been farmed by the Harris family for over 160 years. We moved to Southfleet in 1848 having previously farmed in Bedfordshire. The farm has seen many changes having evolved from a very mixed traditional farm growing hops, apples, vegetables and housing Beef cattle.
The farm is now run by John and Mark Harris who are the 6th generation of the Harris’ and they have taken the business into its current regime supporting a fully stocked Farm Shop with fresh home grown and local produce. The farm has also diversified into family entertainment hosting successful events during the school holidays.
It gives us great satisfaction to be able to grow, harvest and sell our own produce to our customers, the beauty of growing your own produce is that its fresh and having been grown without addedwater or irrigation the flavour is second to none.
Cropping on the farm includes: 230 acres wheat, 70 acres oilseed rape, 65 acres of barley, 40 acres beans. 50 acres of grass and 10 acres of woodland. In addition to this we grow the following vegetables for the farm shop: Courgettes, Marrows, Rhubarb, Asparagus, Beetroot, Leeks, Sweetcorn, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Romanesque, Brussel Sprouts,
Savoy Cabbage, Cob Nuts, Pumpkins, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, January King and Tundra Cabbage, Curly Kale, Butternut Squash and Potatoes.
We rotate the crops each year to get the very best out of the fields on the farm. All the fields on the farm have names and this year we will be growing most of the vegetables in Maggotty Field, but also Filbert and Abbott fields.
In 2001 we joined the countryside stewardship scheme whichencourages farmers to create and preserve natural habitats. We have now progressed onto the higher level stewardship scheme to maintain the environmental benchmark we have already achieved.
